Mission-Critical Black-Start GT

Your facility cannot go dark, and your gas turbine generators are meant to guarantee that. But after a total loss of supply, a turbine needs cranking power, lube oil, controls and fuel pressure before it can turn, and someone has to restore all of that on a dead bus.

If black-start is treated as a button on the turbine, the first real blackout exposes the gap. Minutes become hours, critical loads fail, data and processes are lost and the outage report lands on your desk with questions you cannot answer.

USP&E as Your Guide for Black-Start Readiness

As data-centre power plants join your site, the restoration sequence grows longer and more complex. Design the black-start scheme for the final site, with clear priorities for which blocks restart first and how loads are restored without overloading the first machines online. Cyber security belongs in the same design, because remote access that helps day-to-day operations must not become a route that blocks or confuses a restart.

Treat Black-Start as a System Duty

A dark bus needs a defined source of cranking power, usually a diesel genset, battery system or small engine, sized for the starting motor or static starter of your largest turbine. It also needs DC supplies for controls and protection, lube oil pumps, fuel gas pressure and ventilation. Map every dependency, because the missing one is the one that stops the restart.

Write the restoration sequence step by step: which breakers open, which source starts first, which auxiliaries energise, when your turbine fires and how load is picked up in blocks. A sequence that exists only in an engineer’s head is not a black-start capability, and it will not survive a night shift under pressure. Put the sequence on laminated cards in the control room, build it into the SCADA screens and rehearse it until operators can follow it without hesitation.

Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B

Logistics for frontier sites differ from metro campuses: customs delays, road closures, and limited air freight change what belongs in Tier A versus Tier B. When in doubt, stock the start-critical items on site and keep hub MW as the backstop via https://www.uspeglobal.com/inventory/.

Natural gas engines often make excellent black-start sources because they start fast and need little auxiliary power. Used or new gas turbines can then be compared on restart time, load acceptance and how many auxiliaries each needs before it can carry critical load. The best design keeps the black-start chain short and simple.

Plan AI Gas Turbines, Hyperscale Generators and FX-45 Blocks

Hospitals, data halls, and industrial campuses often prefer gas for emissions narrative or fuel cost during extended islanding, yet still need diesel for black-start certainty and gas outages. Dual-fuel makes sense when both fuels are realistically available, storage and piping can be maintained, and operators will rehearse changeover — not when gas is theoretical and diesel tanks are neglected. Compare hospital pathway thinking in hospital diesel vs gas pathways.

Coordination means documenting (1) UPS autonomy at design load and at elevated IT density, (2) generator start and ready-to-load times under site ambient, (3) ATS or closed-transition logic, and (4) shed lists that protect the UPS from an overloaded genset. USP&E locks those four before megawatts are ordered from diesel generators inventory or natural gas turbines inventory.

Your path from first call to reliable power

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share single-line diagrams, auxiliary lists and load priorities under NDA. 2. Receive a black-start design with a tested restoration sequence. 3. Commission, drill from a dark bus and run under accountable O&M.

  1. Define mission-critical loads, dark-bus consequences, helper power, fuel plan, and frequency for black-start gas turbine generators.
  2. Write black-start, N+1/N+2, cyber-physical, training, and O&M procedures with named owners and drill dates.

Common questions

Why is black-start a system duty and not a turbine feature?

USP&E treats black-start as a system duty because a turbine needs cranking power, DC supplies, lube oil, fuel pressure and controls before it can start. Each dependency must be restored in order from a dead bus, so the whole chain must be designed and tested.

Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B provide black-start capability?

USP&E can configure a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for black-start duty when its starting system, auxiliaries and dead-bus logic are verified. A suitable cranking source, usually diesel or engines, is sized for it, and the full restoration sequence is tested from a dark bus.

What is the best cranking source for your gas turbine?

USP&E selects cranking sources by matching starting power, reliability and simplicity to your largest turbine. Diesel gensets and natural gas engines are common choices, and battery systems can suit some designs, but the source must be tested regularly so it works on the day it matters.

How often should your black-start be tested?

USP&E recommends regular partial tests of cranking sources and auxiliaries, plus periodic full dark-bus restorations when your site can schedule them safely. Each test follows a written script, results are recorded and any drift in timing or behaviour is corrected before a real blackout exposes it.
