Fuel Polishing for Critical Diesel Generators

The Operating Problem: Stored Diesel Ages Against You

Polishing recirculates fuel through water separation and fine filtration on a scheduled or continuous basis, often with sampling and lab trending. It is not a substitute for buying clean fuel; it is insurance against storage reality. Pair it with tank design, breathers, and housekeeping that AHJs and insurers recognize as life-safety discipline — see life-safety code standby.

What a Serious Polishing Programme Includes

  • Bulk and day-tank circulation — dedicated polishers or integrated skids sized for tank volume and turnover goals
  • Water separation and coalescing — remove free and emulsified water before injectors see it
  • Particulate filtration — staged microns ending at injector-protecting fineness per OEM guidance
  • Sampling ports and trending — water, particulate, microbial indicators on a calendar
  • Alarming — high water, differential pressure, and skid faults to BMS/SCADA operators actually watch

Design Inputs Before You Buy a Skid

  1. Tank volumes, materials, and whether underground or aboveground
  2. Expected fuel age between deliveries and between load tests
  3. Climate (heat accelerates degradation; cold increases condensation risk in some geometries)
  4. Generator OEM fuel cleanliness expectations and filter differential limits
  5. Redundancy: can you polish while still serving day tanks during an outage?
  6. Waste handling for water and sludge under local environmental rules

Failure Modes Polishing Prevents — and Does Not

For dual-fuel sites, diesel polishing still matters because diesel remains the emergency path when gas is unavailable — dual-fuel generators. Gas turbine campuses that keep diesel black-start engines need polishing on those engines even when primary MW is thermal — natural gas turbines, data centres.

Common questions

How often should we polish?

Base frequency on tank volume, climate, sampling trends, and OEM guidance — not a one-size calendar. High-risk life-safety sites polish more aggressively and sample more often.

Can we skip polishing if we load-bank monthly?

Load-banking helps but does not remove water and microbes from bulk storage. Treat polishing as complementary.

Programme Discipline

SEARCH INVENTORY for diesel assets, then scope fuel-farm polishing inside EPC — not as a change order after COD. Internal: EPC & O&M, videos, brochures, UPS coordination, tier strategies, hospital diesel vs gas.

Linking Fuel Quality to Generator Acceptance Tests

For multi-set plants, avoid a single polishing skid becoming a common-mode outage during an emergency — provide bypass paths and, where justified, redundant pumps. Data-center and hospital owners should treat that redundancy with the same seriousness as N+1 generation.
